Buy Local campaign creates obligations for businesses and consumers.

The Bendigo Business Council supports the ‘Buy Local' campaign being launched in Bendigo this week.
BBC Executive officer Kevin de Vries said today "Purchasing products within the local community supports the businesses that provide those products. It helps sustain the operation of those businesses and pays employees' wages that are then spent and spent again. The flow-through benefits to the community are substantial and this campaign can lead to business growth and increased employment."
"In challenging economic times a commitment from the community to purchase goods and services locally is more important than ever."
But the BBC warned that a ‘Buy Local' campaign places obligations on local businesses to ensure that they provide value to local shoppers. "Consumers expect quality products, competitive prices, knowledgeable staff, friendly efficient service and an enduring relationship with a company. Businesses must give consumers every reason to purchase their goods and services locally" Mr de Vries said.
"Technology gives consumers plenty of options to choose where they shop, I urge every business to consider and discuss with their staff the ways that they can create value for consumers through service and competitive prices to encourage local purchases."
Mr de Vries said "The BBC urges consumers to get behind this campaign and compare the quality, value and community benefits of making purchases locally. We encourage individuals and businesses alike to purchase from local businesses wherever possible."
